What Is an Overweight Permit?

An overweight permit is a special type of temporary permit that allows commercial trucks to operate when their gross vehicle weight exceeds the legal limits set by state or federal regulations. These permits are essential for moving superloads, construction equipment, machinery, and freight that can’t be broken down into smaller shipments.

Most overweight permits are route-specific and may require a weight analysis to determine whether the planned roadways, bridges, and infrastructure can safely support the load. This process can take anywhere from a few hours to 24–48 hours, depending on the state and route complexity.

When Do You Need an Overweight Permit?

You must obtain an overweight permit if your load exceeds the standard legal weight limits, which typically include:

Axle Type Weight Limit
Single Axle 30,000 lbs
Tandem (2 Axles) 56,000 lbs
Tridem (3 Axles) 70,000 lbs
Quad (4 Axles) 80,000 lbs
Gross Weight Limit 150,000 lbs
Tire Load Limit 700 lbs per inch

These values may vary by state. Some jurisdictions also impose seasonal restrictions, especially during spring thaw periods, when road surfaces are more susceptible to damage. During such periods, permits may not be issued except in emergencies.

Additionally, to be eligible for an overweight permit, your vehicle must:

  • Be properly licensed per state requirements

  • Use pneumatic (air-filled) tires with appropriate width

  • Be structurally capable of safely carrying the load
